Fuji / Fuji & Meiji-Maru: Centennial Commemorative Fountain Pens
“What Fuji is to mountains, PILOT shall be to fountain pens”. These words, spoken by PILOT's founders, reflect their determination to see PILOT become a world-renowned fountain pen manufacturer, just as Mt. Fuji is one of the world's most lauded peaks. These formative words inspired us to use the image of Mt. Fuji on these commemorative fountain pens, specially produced to mark our one hundredth year. The Fuji fountain pen has an imposing finish, as a result of the entire pen being decorated in exquisite Shishiai Togidashi-Taka Maki-e (Combined Burnished-Raised Maki-e), a technique which requires outstanding technical skill.
The Meiji-Maru was a sailing ship on which both our founders, Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, sailed whist training at merchant marine school. At sea, it is the pilot who guides ships safely through dangerous waters, and the name of our company—PILOT—was chosen in the hope that we might become a guiding figure in the course of the fountain pen industry. This ambition also inspired the design of our Fuji & Meiji-Maru fountain pen: the imposing figure of the Meiji-Maru is shown against the magnificent backdrop of Mt.Fuji, its mighty sails raised as it sets off towards its next century.

Fuji
Fuji & Meiji-MaruThe centennial commemorative fountain pen Fuji uses all of the Maki-e skills we have built up thus far to render an exquisite snow-capped Mt.Fuji using the Rankaku (Egg Shell) technique. The barrel features a landscape dotted with pines, a symbol of longevity.
For the Fuji & Meiji-Maru fountain pen, we used rich blue lacquer to express the sky and the sea, and Togidashi-Taka Maki-e (Burnished-Raised Maki-e) to render the magnificent Meiji-Maru.
